About Personal Boundaries
Social relationships can be very rewarding and also very challenging. The closer the relationship we have with another person, the more challenging it can be. The decisions that one person makes can often significantly affect the people around them. Cooperation, clarification, and compromise are all important relationship skills.
Setting personal boundaries is also an important relationship skill.
Just as there are boundaries with physical affection and sexual touch, there are also appropriate boundaries with decision-making and prioritizing values. Psychological and emotional abuse often involve some violation of these personal boundaries. Such abuse can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-confidence.
Your therapist will help you clarify your own personal boundaries and then identify specific strategies to help you take back your own sense of control while respecting others’ rights as well.
